That’s how I felt as I was walking down S. Pio X when I read the headline, “Rome finally abandons ‘too complicated’ Roman numerals“.
I come back to the world of the living and my early attempt at blogging has to deal with this new reality that my country, my people, my descendants have abandoned a major historic contribution given to the world by us – and all just thrown away because it’s…”complicated”?
Where is the Roman spirit of toughness? perseverance? determination?
As we move into the harvest season during the 2nd half of the month that has such a wonderful name, I would like to take a moment to remind people that 2 millennium ago we had a big festival around this time of year.
Why, well, compared to this modeЯn day and world, food was not taken for granted and was a bit more difficult to produce on a mass scale. We took our work to produce and consume this food very seriously.
Therefore, we welcomed celebrations – in August (and December) – to honor Consus, the god of the harvest and stored grain. And how did we do that? In addition to races in the Circus Maximus, beasts-of-burden were exempted from all labor and led through the streets of Roma decorated with garlands and colorful flowers.
It was already an old story in “my day” but according to the legends, Consulia was founded by Romulus as an occasion to gather his Sabine neighbor. I think most know what happened at that debauchery filled day (a story for another day).
On this day, let’s not only remember the food we eat but also that grains can be used to produce some of the finest liquids for imbibing. And given that I rarely drink, from what I hear, two of the best are:
Cheers to you all this weekend, enjoy, and be sure to toast Consus!
Fragments of my big blog entry
After 2,001 years since my last major blog post, I have returned.
I am catching up with all these technological wonderful ways to communicate today so the format and style may be fluid as opposed to set in stone (like in my day).
Over time, I will muse along various topics that I hope still hold relevance in today’s modeЯn world.
If there is anything in particular you would like to read from me, please be sure to request it.
If there is anything you would like to ask me, please do.
The next blog will be somewhat more substantial.
